September Gardening: Setember Gardening Jobs for Autumn and Beyond.

September is a wonderful time in the garden – it’s a month of transition where we can enjoy the last of summer while preparing for the beauty of autumn and next spring. At ACW Garden Centre in Bradford, we’ve got everything you need to make the most of this pivotal month!

Flowers & Blooms: Your September To-Do List!

  • Plant Spring-Flowering Bulbs: Imagine a riot of colour next spring! Now is the perfect time to get those bulbs in the ground. Think daffodils, crocuses, and hyacinths for an early display. (Available in store now!)

  • Sow Hardy Annuals: Want blooms next summer? Sow hardy annuals like cornflowers and poppies directly into your beds for an early start.

  • Divide & Conquer Perennials: If your perennial clumps are looking a bit crowded, September is ideal for lifting and dividing them. It’s a great way to refresh your plants and get more for free!

  • Take Cuttings: Fancy more fuchsias or pelargoniums? Take cuttings now to grow new plants for next year.

  • Tidy Up & Deadhead: Keep your displays looking fresh by deadheading fading flowers. Cut back spent perennial stems to keep things neat.

  • Collect Seeds: Don’t forget to save seeds from your favourite flowers for sowing next spring!

  • Plant New Shrubs & Trees: The soil is still warm, making it a great time for new additions to establish well before winter.

Lush Lawns: Give Your Grass Some Love!

  • Scarify & Aerate: After a busy summer, your lawn will appreciate some attention. Rake out thatch and moss, and aerate to improve drainage and air circulation.

  • Repair & Re-seed: Got bare patches? Now’s the time to sow new grass seed. The warmer soil and rain will help it sprout quickly.

  • Autumn Lawn Feed: Give your lawn a boost with an autumn-specific feed to strengthen it for the colder months ahead. (Find our range of lawn care products in store!)

Veggies & Fruits: Harvest & Plan!

  • Harvest Time! September is bursting with produce. Pick your maincrop potatoes, pumpkins, squashes, and root vegetables. Pick apples, pears, and plums as they ripen to prevent them from being blown off by wind.

  • Prune Fruit Bushes: Time to prune those summer-fruiting raspberries and get your currant and gooseberry bushes in shape.

  • Sow for Winter & Spring: Keep fresh produce coming by sowing winter salads like lettuce and rocket, or overwintering onions and broad beans.

  • Protect Tender Crops: Keep an eye on the forecast and cover any tender crops if an early frost is predicted

General Garden TLC!

  • Tidy Up: Clear out old summer bedding and give your greenhouse a good clean.

  • Compost! All that garden waste can go straight into your compost heap – think fallen leaves and cut stems.

  • Welcome Wildlife: Clean and refill bird feeders and start to top them up with high-energy foods.

  • Clean Hard Surfaces: Keep paths and patios clear of leaves to prevent slips.

We look forward to seeing you at ACW Garden Centre!
