High-energy foods help birds through cold days and long nights: fat balls, suet treats, sunflower hearts and peanuts. Keep feeders topped up and put out fresh water, breaking any ice on frosty mornings.
Yes. Natural food can be scarce while birds are raising young. Mealworms, calciworms and seed mixes are ideal. Only offer peanuts in a mesh feeder, never loose, as whole nuts can choke young chicks, and avoid fat balls in hot weather.
Use a squirrel-resistant feeder. Caged feeders let small birds in but keep squirrels and bigger birds out, and our squirrel-stop feeders are built to keep squirrels away from the food.
Autumn and winter are ideal, so birds can find it before nesting starts in spring. Fix it 2 to 4 metres up, facing between north and east, out of strong sun and the prevailing wind.
A specialist hedgehog food, such as hedgehog bites, and a shallow dish of fresh water. Never give hedgehogs milk or bread.
Every week or two. Wash feeders and bird baths in warm soapy water or with a bird-safe cleaner, then rinse well. It helps stop diseases spreading between birds.
