Planning a pond?
A pond is only as healthy as its pump and filter. Tell our aquatic team how big your pond is and what you'd like to keep in it, and we'll help you choose a pump, filter and liner that work together.
Seasonal pond care
Start feeding fish when water reaches 10°C. Top up water lost to evaporation and treat for algae as temperatures rise.
Net the pond to catch falling leaves. Switch to wheatgerm food as temperatures drop below 10°C.
Stop feeding fish below 4°C. Use a pond heater or de-icer to keep a hole in the ice for gas exchange.
Pond plants
Pond plants do far more than look good. They shade the water, soak up the nutrients that feed algae and give your fish somewhere to shelter. Our range is at its best from spring to late summer.
The Aquatic & Pond department
The other aquatic ranges under the same roof on Canal Road, so you don't have to go back through the menu.
Heated tropical tanks
Tetras, guppies, angelfish and cichlids for warm aquariums, all carefully sourced and looked after by our aquatic team.
No heater needed
Goldfish, shubunkins and comets, happy in an indoor coldwater tank or out in the garden pond.
Tanks, filters & heaters
Starter tanks, filters, heaters and lighting, everything needed to run a healthy aquarium.
Questions
ACW Garden Centre on Canal Road, Bradford BD2 1AL has a pond section in its Aquatics hall, with pond pumps, filters, UV clarifiers, rubber and PVC liner, pond fish food, treatments, pond fish and pond plants.
It depends on how much water your pond holds and what fish you keep. Filters are rated by pond volume, so measure the length, width and average depth of your pond in metres. Multiply them together and then by 1,000 to get a rough volume in litres. Bring the measurements in and our aquatic team will help you choose.
Green water is caused by tiny algae that thrive on sunlight and nutrients. A filter with a UV clarifier is the most reliable fix, helped by pond plants for shade and not overfeeding your fish.
Rubber liner is thicker and stretchier, so it suits awkward shapes and lasts longer. PVC is a good-value choice for simpler ponds. Whichever you choose, an underlay beneath the liner protects it from stones and roots.
Feed less as the water cools in autumn and switch to a wheatgerm food below about 10°C. Stop feeding once the water drops below 4°C, then start again in spring when it is back above 10°C.
