The key to a great lawn is doing the right things at the right time. Choose a season for tailored advice.
Set your mower to a high cut for the first mow of the season and never take off more than a third of the grass blade at once. Lower the height gradually over the next few cuts.
Spring is a good time to scarify out thatch and moss, then aerate compacted areas with a garden fork or hollow-tine aerator to improve drainage and root growth.
Rake bare patches lightly, sow a quality lawn seed mix and keep it moist. Spring warmth and rain give seed the best chance to establish quickly.
Use a spring and summer lawn feed to encourage lush green growth. Spread it evenly and water it in if no rain is forecast within 48 hours.
Treat moss with a lawn moss killer before scarifying. Spot-treat broadleaf weeds with a selective lawn weedkiller, avoiding hot or dry conditions.
Crisp lawn edges make a big difference to the overall look. A half-moon edger along borders and paths gives your lawn a neat, finished line.

Common questions
Answers to the questions we get asked most often in store.
Apply a spring and summer feed from around March to August while the grass is actively growing. Switch to an autumn and winter feed from September to strengthen the grass for the colder months. Water it in if no rain is expected within 48 hours.
About once a week in spring and autumn, and up to twice a week in early summer when growth is strongest. Never remove more than a third of the grass blade in one cut, and raise the height in hot, dry weather.
Treat the moss with a lawn moss killer, wait until it turns black, then rake or scarify it out. Moss usually points to shade, poor drainage or compaction, so aerating and feeding help stop it coming back.
Early autumn is ideal, as the soil is still warm and there's plenty of rain. Spring also works well once the soil has warmed up. Keep the seed moist until it's established.
Short clippings left after regular mowing return nutrients to the soil and help in dry weather. Collect them if the grass is long or wet, as thick clumps can smother the lawn.
Loosen the soil, rake it level, sow lawn seed or a patch repair mix, then lightly cover and keep it moist. Keep off the area until the new grass has had its first cut.
