Nothing quite says “Christmas” like the scent of a real Christmas tree filling your home. But with so many varieties available, how do you choose the perfect one? In the UK, the most popular choices are the Nordmann Fir and the Fraser Fir. Both offer that classic Christmas tree shape and wonderful fragrance, but some key differences might sway your decision.
Nordmann Fir (Abies nordmanniana): The Low-Maintenance Champion ( Our Choice)
-
- Needle Power: Nordmann Firs are known for their excellent needle retention, so they will stay looking fresh throughout the festive season, even in centrally heated homes. Their soft, rounded needles are also great for families with young children or pets.
-
- Shape & Size: Nordmann Firs boast a classic symmetrical shape with strong branches, perfect for hanging heavier ornaments. They’re available in a wide range of sizes to suit any space.
-
- Scent: While they have a lovely fresh scent, it’s not as strong as some other varieties.
- The Nordmann Real Christmas tree is our personal favourite here at ACW Garden Centre, and that’s why we stock them. They are available from 25th November to Christmas Eve.
Fraser Fir (Abies fraseri): The Aromatic Wonder
-
- Fragrance: If you love that traditional Christmas tree scent, the Fraser Fir is the winner. Its robust and sweet fragrance will fill your home with festive cheer.
-
- Needle Retention: While not as long-lasting as the Nordmann Fir, Fraser Firs still hold their needles well. Their slightly shorter, flatter needles are also less prickly.
-
- Shape & Size: Fraser Firs have a more slender profile than Nordmann Firs, making them a good choice for smaller rooms. They often have a slightly more open structure, ideal for showcasing delicate ornaments.
Caring for Your Real Christmas Tree
Whether you opt for a Nordmann Fir or a Fraser Fir, proper care will help it stay fresh and vibrant throughout the holidays:
Before you Decorate:
-
- Fresh Cut: (Optional) When you get your tree home, saw off about an inch from the bottom of the trunk. This creates a fresh cut and allows the tree to absorb water more efficiently.
-
- Stand and Water: Place your tree in a sturdy stand with a water reservoir. Check the water level daily and top it up as needed. Tap water is all your tree needs.
Keeping it Fresh:
-
- Location, Location, Location: Position your tree away from direct heat sources, such as radiators, fireplaces, log burners, etc. These can dry out your tree quickly, causing premature needle drop.
By following these simple tips, you can ensure your Nordmann Fir or Fraser Fir stays looking its best throughout the Christmas season. Its beauty and fragrance will bring you and your family joy.
We have a selection of stands for the cut trees, including reusable metal ones or single-use wooden discs. Our team is on hand to trim the bottom of your tree to fit the stand you get. If you have your stand from last year, you can bring it with you to ensure your new tree will fit in it.
Our Nordmann Real Christmas trees are available from 25th Nov until Christmas Eve, ranging from 5ft to 10ft, with a few extra larger ones upwards of 10ft.
