March Gardening Jobs

March Gardening Jobs & Tasks

Hello, fellow gardeners! 🌿

The wait is over! March is the month when the garden truly wakes up. As the days lengthen and the soil begins to warm, it’s time to shake off the winter chill and get back into the flower beds.

At ACW Garden Centre, we want to help your garden reach its full potential this year. To get you started, we’ve rounded up the essential tasks for March.

1. Rejuvenate Your Borders

March is the perfect “tidy up” window before the spring growth spurt makes it harder to navigate your flower beds.

  • Weed Early: Clear out perennial weeds (such as ground elder and dandelions) now. Removing them before they establish deep roots will save you hours of work in May.

  • Mulch: Once your borders are clear, apply a thick layer of garden compost or well-rotted manure. This suppresses new weeds and locks in moisture for the summer ahead.

  • Divide Perennials: If your hostas or primulas are looking overcrowded, now is the time to lift, divide, and replant them to create new (free!) plants for your garden.

2. Pruning & Plant Care

A little bit of “tough love” with the secateurs this month ensures a spectacular display later.

  • Roses: Finish pruning your bush roses early this month to encourage strong new stems.

  • Shrubs: Cut back colourful winter dogwoods (Cornus) and willow (Salix) right to the base to promote vigorous, brightly coloured stems for next winter.

  • Feed Your Favorites: Your acid-loving plants like Rhododendrons, Azaleas, and Camellias are hungry right now. Give them a boost with a specific ericaceous fertiliser.

3. The Veg Patch & Kitchen Garden

If you’re growing your own, March is one of the busiest months in the calendar.

  • Potatoes: It’s time to plant your “First Earlies.” If you’re short on space, they grow brilliantly in large bags or tubs.

  • Sow Indoors: Get a head start by sowing tomatoes, chillies, and peppers on a sunny windowsill or in a heated propagator.

  • Sow Outdoors: If the soil isn’t waterlogged, you can start sowing hardy crops like carrots, parsnips, and onions.

4. Lawn Love

As the grass starts to grow, your lawn needs a little TLC after a damp winter.

  • The First Cut: Set your mower blades to their highest setting for the first few mows of the year.

  • Repair & Feed: March is an ideal time to prepare the ground for new turf or to apply a “weed and feed” treatment to help your lawn recover from winter moss.

5. Be “Slug Aware”

With tender new shoots emerging, the “Slugageddon” is real! Protect your vulnerable hostas and delphiniums early.

  • Top Tip: Use grit or crushed eggshells around the base of plants as a natural deterrent, or come and see us for wildlife-friendly slug barriers.
