Fun fact: Potatoes have a fascinating history! Originating in South America, they made their way to Europe in the 16th century and have become a staple food worldwide. Today, there are over 5,000 potato varieties!

Ready to grow your own? Here’s a quick guide:

  •  Chitting Potatoes: (encouraging the seed to sprout early before planting) This method can lead to an earlier harvest than planting directly into ground. To do this, place the seed potatoes into an open container such as an egg box, in a light and airy position, protected from frost. The potatoes will grow small shoots.
  • Planting: Wait until the last frost has passed (usually between March and May). Prepare your planting area by digging over the soil and removing any weeds. Plant your seed potatoes in shallow ridges, spaced 50cm apart, with each potato 12cm deep and 22cm apart.
  • Care: When your potato plants reach about 20cm in height, it’s time to “earth them up.” This involves mounding soil around the base of the plants to protect the developing potatoes and encourage a larger yield.
  • Harvest: Enjoy the fruits (or rather, tubers!) of your labour! First earlies will be ready to harvest around 10 weeks after planting, while second earlies mature a bit later.

Don’t forget: If you’ve chitted your potatoes, be extra careful not to break off the shoots when planting.

Pop into ACW Garden Centre today and grab your seed potatoes! Our friendly team is always happy to offer advice and help you choose the right varieties for your needs. Happy gardening!
