February Gardening Jobs & Tasks
Hello, fellow gardeners!
As the shortest month of the year unfolds, February often feels like a bridge between the deep sleep of winter and the vibrant awakening of spring. Don’t be fooled by the occasional frosty morning; beneath the surface, your garden is already stirring. Now’s the perfect time to get a head start on some crucial tasks that will lay the groundwork for a spectacular season.
Here’s a friendly guide to your essential February garden jobs:
. The Big Tidy Up (It’s More Than Just Aesthetics!) Winter can leave a trail of fallen leaves, forgotten debris, and general untidiness. Now is the ideal moment to:
-
Clear Borders: Remove any lingering leaves, old annual growth, and weeds from your flower beds. This not only makes your garden look neater but also reduces hiding places for pests and diseases.
-
Path & Patio Sweep: Give your hard surfaces a good sweep. If moss or algae are appearing, consider a gentle scrub – just be careful not to damage nearby plants.
Pruning for Health and Bloom February is prime time for certain pruning tasks that encourage vigour and better flowering:
-
Winter-Flowering Shrubs: Once they’ve finished flowering (think Mahonia, Sarcococca, or Hamamelis), give them a light prune to maintain shape and encourage new growth.
-
Roses: If you didn’t do it in autumn, now is the time for your main rose prune. Remove dead, diseased, or crossing stems, and reduce the remaining shoots by about a third to an outward-facing bud.
-
Fruit Trees & Bushes: Dormant pruning of apple and pear trees, as well as soft fruit like currants and gooseberries, can be done now. This improves air circulation and fruit production.
Prepare Your Tools for the Season Ahead. Your tools have likely had a tough time over winter. Show them some love!
- Lawn Mower Check & Maintenance
Top tip: Now’s the ideal time to get your lawnmower out. Book a service with us at ACW before the spring rush – or pop into our lawn mower showroom and upgrade ahead of the season. A bit of effort now = a cracking garden come spring
-
Clean & Sharpen: Wipe down all spades, forks, secateurs, and loppers. Remove any rust with a wire brush, sharpen blades, and oil moving parts. Clean tools prevent the spread of diseases.
-
Organise: Take stock of what you have and what you might need. A well-organised shed makes gardening a joy, not a chore!
Get Sowing Indoors! For those eager to get their hands dirty, February offers the chance to start certain seeds indoors:
-
Hardy Annuals: Sweet peas, snapdragons, and cornflowers can be sown under cover for early summer blooms.
-
Early Vegetables: Broad beans, lettuce, and some brassicas can be started in modules or trays in a heated propagator or on a warm windowsill.
-
The days are getting noticeably longer, and even if there’s a nip in the air, the garden is beginning to whisper promises of spring. February might seem quiet, but if you look closely, you’ll find nature already at work.
Let’s explore what’s bravely pushing through the soil right now and what exciting planting opportunities await you this month!
What’s Gracing Our Gardens Now? Keep an eye out for these hardy harbingers of spring, bringing much-needed colour and cheer:
-
Snowdrops (Galanthus):
These delicate white bells are often the first to appear, carpeting the ground in pure white. They’re a true sign that winter is losing its grip.
-
Crocuses: Bursting forth in vibrant purples, yellows, and whites, crocuses provide an early feast for emerging pollinators.
-
Hellebores (Christmas Roses): Still going strong, or just starting their display, hellebores offer elegant, often speckled, blooms in shades of white, pink, purple, and green. Perfect for shady spots!
-
Winter Aconites (Eranthis hyemalis): Look for their cheerful yellow cups emerging through bare earth.
-
Early Daffodils/Narcissus: Some early varieties might be showing their noses, promising golden cheer soon!
What Should Be on Your Mind for Planting & Sowing?
February is a fantastic time for certain types of planting, particularly if you’re looking for great value and strong establishment.
1. Bare-Root Wonders: This is the golden month for planting:
-
Bare-Root Roses: These arrive dormant, without soil around their roots, offering excellent value and a chance for them to establish before spring growth truly kicks in. We have a wonderful selection at ACW Garden Centre!
-
Bare-Root Trees & Hedging: Similarly, deciduous trees and hedging plants are best planted now while dormant. This allows their root systems to settle before they leaf out.
2. Early Vegetable Garden Stars: If you’re dreaming of homegrown produce, February is when you can start getting serious:
-
Seed Potatoes: Chitting (sprouting) your seed potatoes is a popular activity this month. Get them standing in egg boxes in a cool, light, frost-free place. Later in the month, or early March, you can plant them out.
-
Onion Sets & Shallots: These are incredibly easy to grow from sets (small bulbs) and can be planted directly into well-prepared soil now.
-
Hardy Broad Beans & Peas: Some hardy varieties can be sown directly into the ground if the soil isn’t waterlogged and is workable. Alternatively, start them in modules indoors.
3. Brighten Up Your Containers: For instant cheer, refresh your winter containers with plants that thrive in cooler temperatures:
-
Primroses & Polyanthus: Classic bursts of colour.
-
Cyclamen: Elegant and long-flowering.
-
Hellebores: Dwarf varieties are excellent in pots.
